This past Sunday after Mass, the second edition of the Children’s Program took place in the Sint-Kwintenshuis. The theme for the day was “You are the light of the world,” in line with the Gospel reading.
After a well-deserved snack, we played a name game to help the children get to know each other better. The next activity—a guided blindfold game in search of the light—served as an introduction to the theme: guiding each other toward the light, the light of Jesus.
We wrapped up the games with an action song, fittingly titled “We Are” (often known as “We Are the Light of the World”) by Kari Jobe.
Then came the central part of the program: a story about a girl named Sunshine. She helped a boy at her birthday party who didn’t know how to play a game. Sunshine wanted to help him because she remembered that Jesus calls us to be a light, to bring His light to others and show them the way. Her loving act made the boy very happy—just like all the other children. She truly brought Jesus’ light to everyone.
Afterward, we had a nice conversation with the children and finished by coloring in a picture of a light and writing ideas for the coming week on how we can be a light for others. The children came up with beautiful ideas, such as caring for a little brother or sister, not picking the best spot in class, including everyone in games and other activities, and helping mom and dad.
We ended by making Chinese lanterns to put in our rooms—so that every morning when we wake up, we are reminded to carry Jesus’ light to everyone we meet through many small acts of kindness and love.
