“With the disappearance of a sociological Christianity, in which most children were baptized shortly after birth, more adults are discovering the Christian faith later in life. After following their own path of introduction to the Catholic faith, called the catechumenate, they are then baptized” (Flemish Catholic newspaper Tertio, 2015).
Manoj (from India), Vijole (from Lithuania), William (from Indonesia), and Koen (from Leuven) started their faith journey in October 2020 in high spirits, together with their catechists Patrick, Florian, Kirsty, Father Matthew and Deacon Marc. Due to the COVID-19 measures, they received their instruction via Zoom for a time, but starting on Sunday 31 January they meet again in person, in Sint-Kwinten’s Church, keeping sufficient social distance and wearing face masks. It is cold in the church, but that does not prevent them from continuing their formation and preparing for baptism and/or confirmation.
Their journey is happening a bit differently than expected, but they want to continue in the hope of receiving the initiation sacraments during 2021.
“It is an encouraging sign that there are people who are once again consciously choosing to become Christians. They are, as it were, the ‘explorers’ of the paths of becoming a Christian in a society that is no longer Christian, and in the process they themselves become proclaimers of the faith” (Statement of the Belgian Bishops, Volwassen worden in geloof, 2006).
“Met het verdwijnen van een sociologisch christendom waarbij elk kind kort na de geboorte werd gedoopt, ontdekken meer volwassenen het christelijke geloof pas later in hun leven. Na het volgen van een eigen traject van inleiding in het katholieke geloof, het zogenaamde catechumenaat, worden ze dan gedoopt” (Christelijk weekblad Tertio, 2015).
Zo waren Manoj (afkomstig uit Indië), Vijole (afkomstig uit Litouwen), William (afkomstig uit Indonesië) en Koen (afkomstig uit Leuven) vol goede moed aan hun geloofstraject begonnen in oktober 2020 samen met hun catechisten Patrick, Florian, Kirsty, priester Matthew en diaken Marc.
Door de maatregelen rond Covid-19 hebben zij een tijdlang hun onderricht gekregen via Zoom maar van zondag 31 januari komen zij opnieuw samen en wel met voldoende afstand en voorzien van mondmaskers in de Sint-Kwintenskerk. Het is koud in de kerk maar dat belette hen niet zich verder te vormen en zich voor te bereiden op het doopsel en/of het vormsel.
Het traject loop wat anders dan verwacht maar ze willen doorgaan in de hoop om in de loop van 2021 de initiatiesacramenten toch te mogen ontvangen.
“Het is een bemoedigend teken dat er mensen zijn die er opnieuw bewust voor kiezen christen te worden. Ze zijn als het ware de ‘verkenners’ voor de wegen van het christen worden in een niet langer christelijke maatschappij en zij worden daarbij zelf verkondigers van het geloof” (Verklaring van de Belgische bisschoppen, Volwassen worden in geloof, 2006).
